The Battle Between Story and Gameplay

"Many people who is in the gaming community rants that today's games are lacking in story quality."

Story is a line of events in a limited range of time. Like a lifetime, a war, a stupid blond kid screaming in a town with a stupid fairy. It's the thing that motivate us to listen a told-story, read a book or watch a movie. But videogames has a feature that the other stories don't: Interactive gameplay... Because is a game.

Many people who is in the gaming community rants that today's games are lacking in story quality. This has been the excuse to defend games like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and many other games... I rather think these in particular are rubbish even in story, but is that really important the story in a videogame?

Although I think story can drive a game half the road... It never should do more than that. Because the whole point of videogames is the interaction between the game and the player and the story is rarely interactive. The first videogames ever didn't had story, just an objective. It was all about the gameplay and it should stay this way, because if you make a videogame just for the story you are doing something FUCKING wrong. If you want to make a story and you don't know how to create good gameplay, there are books, comics, movies and shit to do that.

The whole point of games is the interactive part of it and if you try to compensate with pure story, you are going to create a half assed story delivery and a really FUCKING boring game. There are genuine good games with bad story like Spy Hunter, Tekken, Street Fighter, Dead Rising 2, Skate. There are even very good games with no story at all like Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo, Pong, Pacman, Tetris, etc.

I know that games with good story have their merit, I won't discuss that... but putting story over gameplay is just wrong. Goes against the whole point of a videogame and if you think I'm wrong, go back to your stupid JRPGs you asshole... Yes, you in the glasses!
